HABITAT project
– a participative dance performance by Cie Kata Juhasz (H) –
Preface
We are after the parliamentary elections. The existing regime has been authorized for another 4 years after 3 consecutive election cycles. As we experienced during the last 12 years the rhetorics of exposition remained ineffective be it the burning of opposition letter votes or letting the russian secret services spying the files of the Ministry of Foreign affairs. Hungary has become a country without –political or legal- consequences.
The antique roman saying: Divide et impera (Divide and rule) applied in practice is the main tactics and the correlative of the so called „central force field” (the political theorem of the recent prime minister of Hungary, Mr. Viktor Orban) that results the sustainability of the regime.
In these circumstances we had to figure out how we can make a difference by using the performative power of dance or rather of dancing together.
The artistic response with regards to social responsibility
By opposing the practice of our recent political system we decided to create a participatory dance piece that is suitable to provide personal experience for the members of „audience” on cooperation, joint decision making, trust, personal and mutual responsibility each on the level of physicality.
Achievements
The performance is entirely based on the physical participation of the audience, keeping them moving constantly throughout the 50-minute musical composition. Aiming to achieve this a set of rules based on improvisational games has been developed during the creation process. The performance does work for the time being like a movement-based board game which was tested several times by involving different groups e.g. of high school students, or drama teachers, organizational developers etc. with pre-recorded music composed for the very performance. In this phase the dancers act rather as masters of ceremony pursuing to interact with the audience and involve them to the joint dance/ game.
In the meantime through performing dance, participants also gain a visceral experience of the power of moving together in the community.
